Oh the irony!

U.S. President Donald Trump campaigned on a promise to “Make America Great Again” and to decisively confront Iran. A careful examination of the results, however, reveals a painful irony: his policies and decisions have left America appearing weaker, Iran stronger, and Israel increasingly isolated and maligned.
Trump repeatedly boasted that he would cut Iran down to size. Instead, his approach has emboldened the Islamic Republic. He ordered what was described as the greatest military buildup against them in recent memory, yet at every critical juncture he blinked. Whether out of late realization that full confrontation risked regional or even global chaos, or for other reasons, the threats evaporated when the moment of decision arrived.
At the outset of the recent conflict, Israel seized the initiative, striking hard at Iranian leadership and air defenses. The United States, however, failed to capitalize on this opening. Instead of pressing the advantage, Trump repeatedly ordered Israel to stand down — in Gaza, in Lebanon, and against Iran itself. One is left wondering whether victory was ever the true objective.
He had promised that Iran would abandon its nuclear ambitions, surrender its materials, and that the Strait of Hormuz would remain open and secure. Today those pledges have been reduced to vague “understandings” that even a child can see Iran will never honor. The regime now openly defies America and mocks Trump on a daily basis.
In a troubling development, Trump and his Vice President J.D. Vance have turned to openly criticizing and belittling Israel. They portray Prime Minister Netanyahu, who is engaged in an existential struggle for his nation’s survival, as the primary obstacle to peace. Israel’s genuine achievements against Iran are downplayed or quietly appropriated, while America issues orders as if Israel were a mere vassal state. The tone is reminiscent of the arrogant boasts of Sennacherib in the days of King Hezekiah (see Isaiah 36–37).
Trump and his circle claim Israel stands alone, conveniently forgetting the support of nations such as Argentina, Slovenia, India, the Czech Republic, Germany, Panama, and others. These insinuations are not only unfair; they border on the malevolent.
The broader consequences are unmistakable. America’s military superiority has been shown to be hesitant in practice. China and Russia observe with satisfaction while Trump finds himself appealing to Beijing for help against Tehran. Meanwhile, he claims that Qatar, Pakistan and Turkey are “mediating” with Iran while there is evidence that all three are in fact covertly assisting Iran, and they and other Islamic actors increasingly call the shots. Radical Islam has been emboldened.
The result is not the “knockdown” many hoped for, but rather the rebuilding and strengthening of Iran under a new American-brokered framework.
This outcome carries a profound spiritual message for the Jewish people. In the language of our tradition, we watch the interplay of Edom and Paras (Persia/Iran) and are reminded that ultimate victory does not depend on any superpower. God is showing us clearly that the resolution lies with Him alone.
Our task remains what it has always been: to remain faithful Jews, to continue walking in the ways of Torah and mitzvot, and to place our complete trust in Hashem. As Rabbi Nachman of Breslov teaches, even in the darkest and most confusing times, hitbodedut — personal, heartfelt prayer — and simple emunah (faith) are the path forward. No human leader or alliance will ultimately save us. “The salvation of the righteous is from Hashem” (Psalms 37:39).
May the Almighty soon reveal His glory, confound the designs of our enemies, and bring true redemption to Israel and the world.
